Ten jobs to do before the EICR inspector arrives

On this page

The list of sections is built automatically from the article’s headings.

An EICR visit goes faster when the inspector can reach everything they need to test. These are the jobs that make the biggest difference.

  • Clear access to the consumer unit.
  • Find the meter cupboard key, common in flats and Central MK apartment blocks.
  • Tell tenants the power will go off in stages during the visit.
  • Flag medical equipment or home-working so testing can be planned around it.
  • Open up lofts, garages and outbuildings that have a supply from the house.
  • Have the last EICR or EIC to hand so readings can be compared.
  • Locate any second board or off-peak meter.
  • Make most sockets reachable.
  • Keep pets secure, as doors will be opening and closing.
  • Share parking details: permit, parking court or visitor bay.

Why it matters

Anything the inspector cannot reach is recorded as a limitation. Fewer limitations mean a clearer report and less chance of a return visit.
